A classic! The director is openly lesbian; no one actually comes out, the film just follows their romance (the novelty!); and the characters are not the archetypal lesbian butch/femme pairing. I believe that the characters develop beyond stereotypes in that their growth regards their own independence and self-discovery, rather than solely their sexuality.
Was a major deal to many of us, especially as younger gay women. Usually in films, the lesbian either kills herself or “finds a man.” This one was honest and pulled no punches. And it was beautiful.
