Part rom-com, part bromance, Chasing Amy is about a male comic artist who falls in love with a lesbian woman who eventually returns this love, despite his best friend’s protests. Some props for pretty early gender fluid representation but done clumsily in the way it caters to the egregious stereotype that lesbians just haven’t met the right dude yet. Ends up really being a coming-of-age story for the straight guy that just happens to have a lesbian love interest who mostly exists to jumpstart his evolution.
