Women Of Color In The Spotlight

The 10th annual Queer Women Of Color Film Festival celebrates a decade of love and diversity with 32 new films in the heart of San Francisco.

The Queer Women Of Color Film Festival will return to the Brava Theatre in San Francisco to display film submissions made by the empowered women artists who want their stories told.

The film festival is presented by the Queer Women Of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) which serves queer women of color, gender nonconforming and transgender people of color in all of its programs.

The film festival will play host to a plethora of interesting and exciting events. The Festival focus, “Re-Generation: Land, Environment, Food,” takes root in our cultural legacies of sustaining the earth. There will also be a special panel with acclaimed queer women of color filmmakers who will discuss the art and transformative power of film.

The 2014 festival will showcase films from the QWOCMAP Film and Freedom Academy tour of California, and new documentaries from Colombia and Paraguay.

From the first bloom of desire between two queer Asian women to a juicy Black femme understanding her own allure; from young Iranian and Black Latina girls budding with their own power to the monumental strength of queer Asian refugees—these films sow seeds of fearless resistance, and cultivate joy and liberation.

This year, for the first time ever, all of the films in the 10th annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival, including world premieres and festival circuit faves, will be fully captioned and subtitled to be accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) promotes the creation, exhibition and distribution of new films and videos that address the vital social justice issues that concern queer women of color and our communities, authentically reflect our life stories, and build community through art and activism.

The QWOCMAP actively invest in, develop and nurture the creativity of emerging media artists who are Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Latina, Native American and Mixed-Race lesbians, bisexual, queer and questioning women in the Bay Area.

QWOCMAP provides training, screening opportunities and resources free of charge to guarantee full access to our traditionally underserved community, particularly low-income and immigrant queer women of color.

The festival will take place June 13th-15th, 2014 at the Brava Theater located at 2789 24th Street at York in San Francisco and is free to the public.
