The ’30 Rock’ star Tina Fey accepts a GLAAD award and spills on who she’d take a dip in the “lady pond” with.
The GLAAD Media Awards, sponsored by ROKK Vodka, at the Marriott Marquis on Saturday, March 19 saw recipients honored for their contribution to amplifying the voice and visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, especially by holding the media accountable for the words and images they create and disseminate in a media-saturated world.
The Awards night had many lesbian highlights, not least of which was the delicious Tina Fey playing a game of Fey On Gay with host Andy Cohen, and accepting her award for Outstanding Individual Episode in a series without a regular LGBT character, 30 Rock.
Fey was asked by Cohen who she would “dive in the lady pond for.” Fey responded, “My stock answer is Oprah, [but] I would say maybe Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman.”
But Fey’s comic fancy really took flight when Cohen asked her which TV couple she imagined must have gotten to first base. Fey skipped Kate & Allie to paint the audience a picture of The Beverly Hillbillies: “Jane Hathaway and Granny made a poultice one night, drank some moonshine out by the cement pond, both kind of picturing Ellie Mae and making it work.”
She also promised that “The moment 30 Rock is canceled, I’m getting [Rachel Maddow’s] haircut.”
When accepting her award she asserted that her creation, 30 Rock, offered not only a “truly diverse, inclusive and positive workplace;” it also had “nothing but respect for the [LGBT] community.”
Other highlights of the Awards included Outstanding Digital Journalism—Multimedia for “Bridal Bliss: Aisha and Danielle” by Essence.com, activist Janice Langbehn’s moving address on her experience of spousal visitation rights denied, and Ricky Martin’s touching address on being out, in which he publicly thanked his partner for the first time.
GLAAD Media Award recipients were announced in 25 of this year’s 32 media categories. Additional awards will be presented in Los Angeles at The Westin Bonaventure Hotel on Sunday, April 10, and in San Francisco at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis on Saturday, May 14.
