Newly renovated LGBT heart of NYC opens.
New York City’s newly-renovated LGBT Community Center reopened on February 3, 2015, with an official ribbon-cutting and unveiling celebration. After undergoing a $9.2 million dollar renovation, the city and Board of Directors proudly presented the new and improved Center to the community, as guests toasted the occasion with St. Germain cocktails.
Speakers including Executive Director Glennda Testone, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York State Assembly member Deborah Glick, and New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer.
The final speech of the evening was delivered by LGBT icon and marriage equality pioneer, Edie Windsor, a recent Curve cover girl. To honor Windsor’s landmark trial, which changed the course of marriage in this country, the Center’s new coffee shop bears her name and that of her late wife, Thea Spyer.
Established in 1983, New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center building is located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan and is visited by more than 300,000 people each year.
