Theenie, a lesbian mother, has a choice – lose her beloved child, or retain custody in exchange for conforming to her family’s idea of what she ought to be; a compliant, dutiful daughter and heterosexual wife.
When Theenie’s father, brother and the bigoted judge Solomon regard Theenie’s search for her own truth as dangerous, they draw on centuries of tradition to try to control the language she uses and the very ground she walks on. Never without hope, Theenie challenges the prejudices with wit, wisdom, dignity, self-hood and love.
Pinball, by Alison Lyssa, is an anti-naturalistic comedy that aims to overturn a world that would otherwise crush a woman by taking away not only her right to nurture and love a child, but also her right to construct a world where she can nurture and care for her own self.
