Starting from Scratch is a story about Avery, a graphic designer who has a passion for baking and has a growing crush on the financial manager of the bank she keeps her account on.

She goes to a dinner at Maddie’s and J.T.’s house, two of her long time friends, and is asked by Maddie to coach her T-Ball team of five and six year old while she undergoes and recovers from knee surgery. The problem is she believes she’s no good with kids and is less than happy with the coaching arrangement.

When she starts to coach the team, she starts to grow comfortable about being surrounded by children. In the team, she meets a little boy named Max, who happens to move in at a house in her neighborhood with his mother Elena. When Avery meets his mother, she discovers that she is no other than the financial manager she has a crush on.

As time goes by, Max and Avery start to build a small routine of baking together at her house and their relationship, as well as hers with Elena, starts to grow.

There’s not much I can say about the story without giving away the twist. The story is one of my favorites from Georgia Beers. It has a topic that not many lesbian novels have, a relationship were children are involved. We have Avery, who thinks she is no good with children and we have Elena, who has to think on her child first.

Then we have Max, Elena’s son, who with his innocence took Avery out of her shell. This love story is very sweet and realistic, and Georgia Beers did a great job on bringing these characters to life. I can guarantee you; once you start reading this book you won’t want to put it down until the end.
