Ellen DeGeneres Named Recipient Of The Presidential Medal Of Freedom

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor.

The 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom were announced today by President Barack Obama. One of the recipients named is everyone’s favorite talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres.

On November 22 at the White House the awards will be presented to the 21 individuals who have made commendable contributions to national interests or the security of the country, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavours.

President Obama said, “The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation’s highest civilian honor—it’s a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way.”

Following the recent Presidential Election, Ellen reminded everyone that we are more alike than we are different.

Other recipients include Grace Hopper, Cicely Tyson, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Lorne Michaels, Maya Lin, Michael Jordan, Tom Hanks, and Margaret H. Hamilton.
