This Is One Massive Talent From Hemming
Hemming is Make or Break: the Linda Perry Project’s co-winner Candice Martello. To be honest I hadn’t seen any of the show when this video was sent to me, but hearing how fantastic Martello was I had to catch a few episodes of the show.
What I did was have a binge weekend of watching the show because after 2 minutes of watching Linda Perry I was hooked by her energy, vibe and outright intelligence. Watching this journey of talented musicians – it was two who really shone through with that “star” quality.
Martello was one of them. In fact when Martello opened her mouth to sing her own song for the first time it moved me so much that I was shamefully thinking that she needed to depart from Omar, her band at the time, and spread her wings as a soloist.
Martello did just that, breaking away from her band in an emotional rollercoaster and was subsequently signed to Perry’s Custard Records. Perry has nothing but praise for her rising star, stating her songs are “Raw honest emotion, the kind of emotion that this industry was once built on”.
With exceptional praise from someone who holds musicians to such high standards we should expect big things. If the first single is anything to go by we are not going to be disappointed.
Now known as Hemming, Martello the acoustic singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, PA is talented and someone to watch. The debut single is “Hard on Myself” and it’s catchy, real and engaging.
The video, filmed around Los Angeles is edgy with Hemming singing on the streets in Hollywood busking (as a throw back to Make or Break) and she is out and about in Venice, Santa Monica and perhaps one of my favourite spots the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
Hemming has a voice that is warm, yet raw in its energy drawing you into the narrative with ease. Lending herself to the folksy sound, “Hard on Myself” is a strong debut single from this refreshing talent and I wait with baited breath for the debut album release (and don’t worry I’ll review that for you too).
