Introducing a more poppish Sleater-Kinney for the next generation.
If there is one thing that there can never be enough of in the world, it’s all-girl pop punk bands. There’s something about the raw energy of a bunch of women screaming their lungs out, in antithesis to every conception of female passivity and politeness, that really gets a crowd going.
Enter ‘We Are She Is’ (WASI). Like the rad, queer riot bands before them, this Los Angeles duo, comprised of Merilou Salazar and Jessie Meehan, is about more than just sick beats: it’s about using the emotive intensity of sound to rock the world into a better, more progressive future.
Salazar and Meehan are both queer women, and they want to use their music to spread queer love, and to bolster the fight for female and LGBT rights. The fact that their songs are incredibly catchy makes them all the more effective.
WASI explains “The songs on this EP touches on our finding the power within ourselves. It touches base on our past as kids feeling lost in tender times to the power we find in our activism and community.”
WASI have just released their new single, Floor Talk, The single is a teaser from their soon-to-be released EP, Coup, which comes out May 9.
These women have a clear message: they are not to be trifled with. Case in point, when they couldn’t find a festival that perfectly suited their vibe, they just made their own, which they aptly titled ‘Women Fuck Shit Up Fest.’ This is a wave of collective passion that you’ll want to ride.
