Know Your Workplace Rights!

Lambda Legal launches “Know Your Rights at Work” helpline for LGBT and HIV people struggling with discrimination.

There has been an estimated total of 71,165 same sex marriages in the U.S. since 2004 according to pewresearch.org, and big names such as boxer Frank Maloney coming out as transgender filling recent news headlines. Awareness of sexuality, gender, and HIV are seemingly at their peak, and yet all this advancement is still sometimes difficult to comprehend in a workplace. For this reason, Know Your Rights hubs have launched a new helpline branch to cover workplace discrimination.

Greg Nevins, Counsel and Workplace Fairness Project Strategist based in Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office in Atlanta claims that “Among callers to our Legal Help Desk, workplace issues are a top concern year after year—second only to relationship recognition.” For this reason, resources such as the Know Your Rights hubs are invaluable. The hubs have different branches set up to deal with a variety of problems faced by LGBT and HIV positive people; as well as their workplace hub they also have a line catering for teens and young adults, and another for transgendered people.

These hubs can assist by giving legal and advocacy guidance on matters such as:

–              What to Do If You Experience Discrimination

–              The Laws that Protect You

–              HIV Discrimination in the Workplace

–              What to Do if You are Fired

–              Gender Identity Discrimination

–              Your Job Search

–              Immigrant Rights

–              Good Company Policies

–              How Unions Can Help

–              Same-Sex Spousal and Partner Benefits

These hubs are soon to be mobile-accessible as well as translated into Spanish, making it a great user friendly resource.
