Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity”
10 years ago, Katy Perry shot to superstardom with her mega-catchy ode to snogging ladies, I Kissed A Girl.
The track became an instant gay bar go-to and women of all sexualities seemed to love having a good ol' boogie to it. Not everyone was a fan though. Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto criticised the song, arguing that it was offensive to LGBT culture.
Well, now the pop star with a penchant for rainbow-coloured wigs has had a decade to reflect and she’s decided that Beth might have had a point.
In a brand new interview with Glamour, she admitted:
“We’ve really changed, conversationally, in the past 10 years. We’ve come a long way. Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity.”
She added:
“If I had to write that song again, I probably would make an edit on it. Lyrically, it has a couple of stereotypes in it. Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much. What’s true for you can evolve.”
It’s not the first time Katy’s opened up about her breakthrough hit. Just last year, while collecting the prestigious National Equality Award at the Human Rights Campaign Gala, she admitted that she herself had done more than just kiss a girl.
While we’re swotting up on I Kissed A Girl fun facts, let’s not forget that Miley Cyrus previously claimed that she was the one the song was written about.

While being interviewed on radio show, Cubby And Carolina In The Morning, Miley revealed:
“Katy Perry, she’s been a friend of mine for a really long time. We were actually just realising the other day that next year, we’ll have been friends for 10 years. I think that’s my friend that I’ve known the longest, which is really, really weird. When she came out with I Kissed a Girl, I was doing the Hannah Montana movie, and I heard her on the radio, they said, ‘Who’d you write that about?’ And she said me.”
OMG, not only did Katy Perry kiss a girl, but that girl was pansexual pop icon Miley Cyrus.
Our Miles reminisced about the first time she ever heard the track that she had inspired:
“I was on a four-wheeler. We had a radio attached to the four-wheeler. I heard it and started screaming and freaking out.”
So there you have it. More I Kissed A Girl pop trivia than you can shake a chapstick at. Are you going to boss your next queer pub quiz, or what?!
