Singer-songwriter Hannah Trigwell on coming out, tortured love and journalists who still don’t get it

I see Hannah Trigwell’s tweet as I’m on my way to meet her. I have two immediate thoughts. One: jeez, this kind of BS still goes on? Two: ooh, I wonder who her celebrity crush is!
The Leeds-born singer-songwriter has risen to impressive heights in recent years, going from busking for loose change outside WH Smith to racking up almost 500,000 YouTube subscribers with her stunning covers – her spine-tingling rendition of Stay With Me has been viewed a mind-blowing 22 million times. Her original material is going down a treat too, reaching number-one in places as far-flung as Laos and Vietnam, which she describes, succinctly and with signature Northern charm, as “mad”. When I meet her in a central London cafe, she seems unaffected by her success, down to earth and pretty amused that I’m so intrigued about which famous lady she fancies.
