Outfest LA just wrapped and we have a first hand look at a hot new lesbian film that is sure to make it into your DVD collection.
It’s no big surprise: lesbians love women. We love their shape. We love their touch. We love the over excited feeling we get when we have that one beautiful woman smile at us from across the room. We love the chase and we certainly love the fantasy. So grab your U-Haul keys and make at stop and the cinema for what is sure to be a good time.
Over the last couple of weeks, Outfest LA has been screening a plethora of lesbian films for us to drool over. Started in 1982 by UCLA students, Outfest has been promoting equality for over thirty years in the form film and has screened thousands of films from around the world. The 2014 Outfest LA premiered and screened dozens of films that are worthy of the queer spotlight.
Let me set the scene for you. If you’ve never attended an LGBT film festival in your life, then you should definitely start. You are in your element surrounded by people who have the same love and respect you do for queer cinema.
The film of the evening: Anatomy of a Love Seen. Written, directed, and having a lead role, by Marina Rice Bader (Elena Undone, A Perfect Ending) it was conceived, shot and put into post-production in just thirty days. The script was only fifteen pages and most of the dialogue was improvised by the cast, which puts this film in a category above the rest. While having the world premiere at Oufest, the global launch of the film on VOD took place immediately following the ending credits at 12:01am EST.
The film follows our actors who portray actors Zoe (Sharon Hinnendael) and Mal (Jill Evyn) as they try to re-shoot a love scene they had previously shot six months prior. During their initial love scene they fell madly in love with each other at the same moment the scene was being recorded. Throughout the opening sequences we discover their break up and how it was a rough one. The true cause that ignited the break up fire became apparent further along in the story. The film within the film tossed us an interesting curve ball that I didn’t see coming with a secret that the director (Bader) was keeping from her actresses.
Will re-shooting a love scene prove to be the power strong enough to re-kindle the flame these women obviously still feel for one another burning within their hearts? The picture proves to be an emotional roller coaster, not just for our two leads, full of tears, laughs, more tears and, of course, the love scene. Or is it love seen?
“Love and all the ups and downs and all the roller coasters, I think we touched upon everything and people can relate to the actors,” says Bader during her Q&A session after the premiere of her film. “It’s my complete confusion with love. So torturous.”
This film has a very interesting concept and was uniquely portrayed through the screenwriting and intense performances of the actors. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll want more.
Bader makes her directorial debut in Anatomy of a Love Scene but is no stranger in the world of motion pictures. The Soul Kiss Films owner has produced some of the hottest streaming lesbian films out today and is directing her second film, Raven’s Touch that is in the post-production phase.
