Directed by queer filmmaker Sekiya Dorsett, The Revival: Women and the World follows a group of five queer women of colour, poets and musicians, as they make a documentary on a Kickstarter-funded tour of bars and living rooms in the US and Canada.
The documentary highlights the women’s travels in their tour bus, visiting friends and estranged family members, meeting supporters, performing live and coming face-to face with the chilling threat of racial violence.
The most important aspect of this documentary is that the audience hears the women. They each have a lot to discuss, on and off stage, and everything they say is well worth the listen.
This fascinating look at resistance, empowerment, community, connection and creativity is a unique, uplifting, and inspiring film.
Featuring the incredible talents of Jade Foster, Be Steadwell, Jonquille Rice, T’ai Freedom Ford, and Eli Turner, their journey is interspersed with interviews with leading black feminist authors, academics and historians, including Nikki Finney, CC Carter, Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Alexis Deveaux, speaking about subjects that parallel the word and the personal lives of the five performers.
