Redefining the Black Community

Redefining the Black Community

New Black Versus Traditional Black

The New Black is a documentary that unabashedly shows the struggles of black LGBTs.

Even after SCOTUS’ ruling, this film is still incredibly poignant.

The main focus is the passing of marriage equality in Maryland, and what that meant to people on both sides of the debate. Neither glorifying nor demonizing either side, we see the struggle and concerns of the African-American community, the LGBT community, and the African-American LGBT community.

Speakers, clergy, and activists from both sides openly discuss homosexuality and religion. The sentiments and beliefs are palpable. No one is driven by hate – rather, both sides feel convicted from the bottom of their hearts.  The dialogue is frank, wrought with emotions, and sincere. Debates occur, but both sides allow themselves to be heard in a respectful manner.

The reality is that the black community, like the Hispanic community, has its roots deeply entwined with religion. Separation of church and state is a huge struggle for all of the people documented in this film. It is difficult for them all as they try to balance their faith with their identity.

A documentary like The New Black is incredibly important. Not only does it document our politics and evolution as a country, it brings forth a very necessary dialogue. Where does religion belong in our culture? Do religions and politics mix?

Who is right? Can we balance faith and science? What does all of this mean to LGBTs of color?Comparing marriage equality with the civil rights campaigns of the mid-twentieth century, the ideas and emotions presented are amazing to watch coming from the black community.

Do LGBTs suffer the same issues and inequalities that African-Americans have for centuries? Is it fair and correct to compare the LGBT rights movement to events and people like Rosa Parks? Is this a true civil rights issue, or is it a counter-culture movement? Is there inequality between heterosexual African-Americans and LGBTs of color? How can we make sense of our culture, our country, our faith, our science, and our humanity?

The New Black is a relatively short film, running at only eighty minutes.

Even though it’s two years old, the topics, beliefs, and issues are still on the forefront today. This movie is powerful and poignant. It opens our eyes and our minds to all of the factors that have played key roles in our ever-changing politics. The New Black is a documentary that is a must watch for all members and citizens of our country.
