10 Blue Is The Warmest Colour GIFS to dispel the Blue Monday myth
The third Monday in January has, for the last decade at least, become known as “Blue Monday”.
This is, of course, a load of bollocks and may even contribute to damaging misconceptions about depression, trivialising what can be a life-threatening illness.
In a bid to change the way people think about Blue Monday, mental health charity Mind created the hashtag, #BlueAnyDay, to dispel the myth that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year, and to remind people that depression is a serious condition that can affect people on any day.
“One in 6 people will experience depression during their life. It can be extremely debilitating with common symptoms including inability to sleep, seeing no point in the future, feeling disconnected from other people and experiencing suicidal thoughts”, Mind’s Head of Information Stephen Buckley said on the creation of #BlueAnyDay in 2016.
“There is no credible evidence to suggest that one day in particular can increase the risk of people feeling depressed. There are of course certain things that may make people feel down at this time of year, such as post-Christmas financial strains, broken New Year’s resolutions, bad weather and short daylight hours. However, depression is not just a one day event.
“We want to remind people that depression can happen at any time and that Mind is available to help people throughout the year.”
So, in an (admittedly loosely related) bid to move away from the usual Blue Monday-bumph, we decided that instead, today will forever be known as Blue (Is The Warmest Colour) Monday – however you might be feeling. You’re welcome.
