Bruce Museum’s upcoming show hopes to continue to focus the art-world conversation on women.
There is rising momentum for an increased focus on female artists in galleries and in the media. While numerous exhibits have recently featured women’s art, little attention is paid to collecting the art created by women.
The 2015 Report Card by the Guerilla Girls, a group of feminist activist artists, revealed that only 5 out of 34 select New York City galleries include rosters with more than 50% women.
Greenwich, Connecticut’s Bruce Museum’s upcoming show Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors’ Private Collections, hopes to continue to focus the art-world conversation on women. The exhibit will offer the rare opportunity to see what America’s most influential collectors of contemporary art consider beautiful, important, and compelling.
Her Crowd displays themes specific to women that continue to be of significance including motherhood, sexuality, beauty and its discontents, stereotypes of femininity and their undoing, and intersections of gender and race.
Both established and new artists are featured with the exhibition including remarkable pieces by Yayoi Kusama, Kiki Smith, Betye Saar, Annie Lapin, Margaret Lee, and many others.
Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors’ Private Collections will offer a glimpse into the exciting interchange between contemporary artists and their passionate collectors.
