The Color Purple is one of the greatest films of all time.
No one considers it a LGBTQIA+ film, and that’s crazy to me.
The main character, Celie, is a lesbian.
That’s clearly explained in the book. In this movie, the only joyful lesbian moment she gets is an afternoon kiss with Shug Avery.
But it SHOULD be included in our category.
The movie is powerful, emotional, difficult, and the ending is amazing.
The movie deals with violence and abuse (physical, sexual, mental), misogyny, and racism. It can be hard to watch. But, again, it’s one of the greatest films of all time.
