Set in a women’s prison in upstate New York, Jenji Kohan’s series OITNB (based on Piper Kernan’s memoir) is one of the most groundbreaking series of the 21st century. The series features dozens of women Hollywood historically ignored—poor women, black women, brown women, trans women, lesbians, immigrant women, fat women, elderly women, mentally ill women. The show takes the time to develop nuanced characters with storylines that delve into rich backstories and specific experiences, especially around queer and trans characters. It’s funny and sad and hard and absurd and started so many conversations we need to have.
