Indie offering from Femmepop is a sign of great things to come. A solid debut album, “From A Girl Who Never Sleeps”
Straight away I’m going to tell you that I love this album. There is something that has to be respected when you have an artist that creates a work essentially all by themselves.
Written, recorded and produced by Margaret O’Sullivan, AKA Femmepop then mixed by Gavin Monaghan we have one solid pop album, all created as a very much DIY effort.
Kicking this album off with synths and loop beats “1983” is bright and fun and leads perfectly into “Timescapes”. “Yellow Lines” starts with a grungy guitar riff and moves into a light pop track all while keeping that guitar riff underlying the soft vocals.
“Astrogate” floats through with ease and leads us into the longest running track on the album “Not That Kind”, which is also the ballad for this album. It immediately has a slight difference in sound and pathos that the other tracks don’t have nor need. Without loosing the light pop charm of the album this track marks the interlude into the second half with creative flair.
As we head into the second half of this album with the folk slanted “Don’t Fear” we are introduced to a more paired back track with acoustic guitar and Femmepop playing with the vocals in very light competing vocal lines through the chorus. Listening to “Where Are You” with its cool rock edge intertwined with the funky synths and beats it’s very lounge cool.
As you know I like a great track to chill out to in my car, this is that song from this album. It’s that song you want to cruise about in your car, the windows down on a warm summers day rocking along to.
Delicately treading the line between pop accessibility and substance, From A Girl Who Never Sleeps does just that, and does it well. Have a listen for yourself and let me all know your thoughts on this one in the comments below.
