Signature Move, an upcoming feature length film currently in development, will be featured at Tribeca’s “TFI Network” on April 19 and April 20. This romantic comedy and coming-of-age feature film is about a Pakistani-Muslim woman named Zaynab, who lives in Chicago with her conservative-but-sweet TV-obsessed mother.
Zaynab falls in love with Alma, a smart, bold Mexican woman. They share a love of culture, food, and wrestling. Alma tells Zaynab that her grandmother used to be a Lucha Libre wrestler back in Mexico when she was young, which strikes a chord as Zaynab is learning professional wrestling. Zaynab is keeping both her burgeoning wrestling career and her relationship with Alma secret from her mother, and so she must grow to take responsibility for both.
Fawzia Mirza, local Chicago comedian, stars in and co-wrote the film. She is joined by acclaimed director Jennifer Reeder, co-writer Lisa Donato, producers Brian Hieggelke and Eugene Sun Park, and cinematographer Christopher Rejano. This crew has come together to tell an all-American story that everyone can enjoy and relate to, but one that also celebrates a breadth of experiences and identities not always given equal screen time: South Asian, Pakistani, Muslim, Latin, Mexican, LGBTQ, Women, Chicagoan.
