Nations only LGBTQ gym in the nation is in Oakland, CA.
OAKLAND February 19, 2014 – The Perfect Sidekick (TPS) is the first and only all-inclusive LGBTQ and hetero-friendly gym in the nation. Since 2010, TPS has been providing people of all backgrounds a safe space to foster a healthier, happier lifestyle. “I’m a female minority and openly lesbian. I trained at corporate gyms and struggled with witnessing the awkwardness and harassment members of my community faced at these gyms. I founded TPS for my community because we needed it. It’s that simple,” said Nathalie Huerta, owner of TPS.
For decades, LGBTQ folks across America have been absent from regular conventional gyms for the same reasons: “I don’t feel comfortable” and “I don’t know what I’m doing.” This already-underserved community has been missing a safe, comfortable space and the guidance to help live healthier and, for some even, to help “bring their sexy back.” TPS offers open gym, private training and group training, as well as yoga and weekly dietician classes (at no additional charge). Over 90 percent of their staff and clients identify as LGBTQ. Most become friends and hangout outside the gym as much as they do at the gym. “TPS is owned and managed by members of the LGBTQ community, in order to serve members of the LGBTQ community,” stated Nathalie.
It’s not all weights and muscles at TPS. The Perfect Sidekick has made it a priority to support the LGBTQ and the local Oakland community outside the gym. “Two words to sum up what TPS is all about: fitness and community,” said Nathalie. Whether it’s donating their services to local schools, supporting LGBTQ organizations, or adopting local families during the holidays, TPS understands the importance of paying it forward. “If we can help, we do. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do,” said Nathalie.
Last year, TPS won the 2013 Best of Oakland Award in the Gyms category by the Oakland Award Program. The Oakland Award Program identifies local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and their community. “Businesses like TPS help make the Oakland area a great place to live, work and play,” stated the Oakland Award Program.
