English singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan heads to Australia for the very first time this April, where she will play a run of intimate venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
With five albums under her belt including the 2019 “Today Was a Good Day” Lucy Spraggan is that rarest of things – a genuine singer-songwriter to emerge from the TV talent show scene. She was a favourite on the UK X Factor in 2012 just after she released her first record “Top Room at the Zoo” and has managed to build her fanbase into a far wider market since first coming to our attention.
A brilliant live performer, Lucy is synonymous with the melodic middle ground where pop and acoustic folk meet, and her toe-tapping interpretations of classic sounds and harmony-heavy ballads that she pulls from modern rhythm and blues are hard to forget.
With all 5 albums reaching the UK Top 25, Lucy’s live audience has blossomed seeing her play the likes of Glastonbury and SXSW, tour across Europe, and in 2019 complete her own US and UK headline tours which saw huge crowds watch her at some of her biggest venues yet.

This is your first tour to Australia – what can fans expect from your live show and are you bringing a band or playing solo?
I’m coming to Oz completely solo! That’s something I haven’t done in a fair while. I did a short tour of the United States on my own but it’s quite unusual for me to do.
It’s going to be a very fun show with lots of joining!
We’ve read that you’ve been described as ‘That rarest of things – a genuine singer-songwriter to emerge from the TV talent show scene’. Looking back now, how do you think your experience on UK X Factor helped shape your career today?
Every experience in the past helps to create who you are now – so I look back on TXF as a very crazy and fast-paced time in my life, but I look back fondly. My songs were shared all around the world and 7 years later I’m coming to bloody Australia!
You’ve recorded 5 albums in 6 years, and seem to have consistently toured around the UK, Europe and the US, how do you keep a good work / life balance with such an incredibly hectic schedule?
My work is my life really. I write about what is going on, I talk about my relationships and family in my music. So everything that I do revolves back into my music.
I love touring more than anything though, meeting new people, seeing new countries, it’s all amazing and I’m so grateful for it every day. I feel at home on the road.
Being an openly gay musician and recognised as one of the leading lights in the LGBT community – how do you think this influences your song-writing? Does it encourage you to send a strong message in your music and your live shows that people should have confidence to be who they are or who they want to be?
Definitely.
The message I want to put out is to be strong and be happy, fight for what you want and don’t ever give up on it. It sounds cliched but that’s truly what I want people to think of when they listen.
We just heard your recently recorded a version of the Proclaimers hit “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – What prompted you to do a cover of this classic track?
I just adore the song. It’s one of the best love songs ever written! I was listening to it and thought ‘I would love to cover this’ so I did. It’s so, so fun to play live.
Finally, hopefully you will have some spare time in Australia to do a little sightseeing or maybe getting out to enjoy our nightlife! Anything on your wish list that you want to do or see while you are here?

I’d love to explore the LGBT scene and take in some of the beautiful surroundings that Australia has to offer (the countryside haha!).
